Moving from Phoebus to Downtown Hampton in 1932, the South Armistead Avenue location of R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home was built with the funeral home on the first floor and, originally, the residence for R. Hayden Smith and his wife on the second floor. In 1967 a renovation was completed that included a large foyer and a 200 seat chapel that featured hand crafted plaster molding and walls giving it a unique acoustic quality. Another addition came in 1999 when the historic Holt House was added to the funeral home after complete renovation of the late 1800’s era home. This added increased capacity for visitations as well as flexibility and greater multi-media capabilities for ever-changing requests in personalizing services while still giving the feeling of being in a home-like setting.
