Obituary

William Patrick "Bill Pat" Williams
1932 - 2018

Our beloved "Superman" passed away at his home on Friday evening, August 24, 2018,
with his daughters by his side. We will cherish the loving warmth of his hugs and kisses,
his wonderful sense of humor, the amazing talents of his art for transferring home movies
on to DVDs, his innate curiosity and his love of reading, and his fondness for home cooking
and Blue Bell Vanilla Ice Cream.

Dad is now with the love of his life of 57 years, Hilda Grey Blalock Williams, who preceded
him in death on March 2, 2017.

Many people knew our Dad as "Bill Pat", his childhood nickname.

William Patrick Williams was born May 11, 1932 at Watts Hospital in Durham, Durham Co., NC,
the eldest son of Fred Pope Williams and Mary Ethel Hatch. While still a young boy, the family
bought a home on Hopson Road in the small community of Nelson (now Research Triangle Park).
He had many fond memories of his youth that he lovingly shared with us. He attended Lowe's
Grove High School. Before completing his senior year, he joined the U.S. Army, finishing his
stint as Corporal, followed by eight years in the U.S. Army Reserve.

Dad studied as an electrician's apprentice for three years, but found that his love of being
outdoors outweighed earning a living working inside. He became a surveyor, and worked
his way to construction foreman and superintendent. He took part in the construction of the
Chesapeake Bay Bridge - Tunnel in the early 1960's, the new Hampton City Hall (the marble
was to be all one color - white), and the expansion of the James River Bridge. He worked for
several companies, including Murray and Dischinger, REA Construction, and J.A. Jones from
which he retired.

A short time after he retired he learned how to repair his own VCR's, and for a few years he
repaired VCR's for others. With new technology came DVD's, and he adapted his talents to
transfer home movies originally on 8 mm, 16 mm, and VHS to DVD. Most of these films were
without sound, so he would incorporate a wide range of appropriate music to the images.

So our Dad, who once told me that as a boy he had wanted to become a cartoonist or a
conductor of music, fulfilled his dream and made many people very happy -- by preserving
their cherished memories on DVD.

Dad was preceded in death by his parents, his eldest sister Barbara Earle Wilson Boggs,
and his younger brothers, Norman Russell Williams and Larry Randall Williams, his infant
daughter Johnsie Lee Williams, and his friend John Sherwood Workman, Jr.

He is survived by his daughters Johnsie and David Sowder, Tammy and Dan Fisher, Tina
Merilic and Paul Anderson, and Peggy and Brian Bourque; his former wife and friend Jean
Ferguson, his sister Maisie Eareckson of Hampton, VA, his sisters-in-law Mary Blohn Williams
of Durham, NC, Betty Williams of Hampstead, NC, and Vionette Tapp of Roxboro, NC; his
brothers-in-law Bill Blalock of Sumrall, MS, Rex Blalock (Hazel) of Roxboro, NC, and F.D.
Blalock (Joyce) of Rougemont, NC; his grandchildren Desiree Hafer (Matt), Timothy Bourque
(Allie), Sean Merilic (Stacey), Paul Bourque (Deborah); and his great-grandchildren Anastasia,
Julia, Silas, Adam, Avi, Jesse, Kathryn, Boaz, and Carly.

Dad is also survived by his friends including Faye Workman, Bob Randall, Cydonia Fusek
and Ed Fusek, Jim and Audrey Brown, and Renelda George.

The family wishes to thank Personal Touch Hospice of Newport News, Dr. Scott Kruger and
Dr. Song Kang, Sentara Hospital, Riverside Hospital, Dr. Todd Weisman, Dr. Stephanie Zeiber,
Dr. Rafic Zaitoun, Dr. Joanne Siu, his physician of seventeen years Dr. Anthony Fisher, a special
thank you to his heart surgeon Dr. Kirk Fleischer, and the many others for the wonderful care they
gave our Dad.

The family gave him a Living Memorial on August 18th.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
