Obituary

William H. Platt, devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, 92, died in his home on October 7, 2016. He was preceded in death by his parents, 5 sisters, and 3 brothers. He is survived by his wife, Renate Platt, daughter, Cecelia Kelly of Hampton, son, Bernard Platt of Norfolk, sister, Elsie Robinson of Newfoundland, PA., 5 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was a resident of Hampton for 56 years and a devout member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, serving as a member of the Nocturnal Adoration Society for over 40 years and Knights of Columbus for 7 years. He was a veteran, serving in the U.S. Navy as quartermaster during and after WWII in the Pacific, Europe, and the Caribbean. He also served in the U.S. Air Force in Tokyo, Japan, Wiesbaden, Germany, and Langley AFB, VA. After military retirement he was an Air Force civilian in records management. He also worked for the U.S. Army Recruiting Command, as well as the U.S. Postal Service. After retiring he volunteered at the LAFB Library and Hampton City Library, as well as the Hampton City Visitor's Center. He also worked at the Mariner's Museum as a security guard. He was very devoted to teaching English to refugees through both a city literacy program and through his Church. Funeral arrangements are through R. Hayden Smith. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday, October 13 th at 10:30am at St. Joseph Church. Internment with military honors will be held at 1:30pm at Parklawn Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph Church or St. Mary Star of the Sea School. His family would especially like to thank the members of Medi Home Health and Hospice for their dedicated care.
