William R. "Bill" Gladden, 79, passed away Saturday, November 1, 2014. Born in Linden, Tennessee, he has been a resident of Hampton since 1960. Bill served in the U. S. Army and Army Reserves. He then served 29 years with the Hampton Police Department, retiring in 1990. He then work 13 years with the U. S. Marshall Service, retiring in 2005. He was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church, Hampton Fraternal Order of Police No. 26 and a lifetime member of the Hampton Elks Lodge No. 366. Bill is survived by his wife of nearly 48 years, Georgia K. Gladden; adopted children, J.J., Stevie, and Bryan; granddaughter, Mini; Sister, Katherine Barber and Brother, Claudie Van "Sonny"; along with lots of nieces and nephews in Georgia, Alabama, Michigan and Tennessee. The family will receive friends from 5-6:30 PM Wednesday, at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home in Hampton. A funeral service will be conducted 11:00 am Thursday in the funeral home chapel by Rev. James William Barrow, Jr. Interment will follow in Parklawn Memorial Park. Georgia wishes to give special thanks for those who helped to take care of Bill. Especially, Jun, India, H.J., Kathy, Donna, Jeff, Kelly, Cassie, Kim, Brenda, Marty, Shelly, Bruce, Steven, James and all of the wonderful people at Ricco Pizza, and the Wonderful people at Outdoor World in Williamsburg. The family wishes expressions of sympathy to take the form of contributions to the Hampton, Fraternal Order of Police No. 26, 2204 Mingee Dr., Hampton, VA 23661. The attire for the viewing and funeral are to be casual.
