Obituary

YORKTOWN - William David "Bill" Conner, 85, passed away Tuesday, January 12, 2016. He was born on December 5, 1930, in Morgantown, WV where he grew up and graduated from Morgantown High School. Shortly after graduation, the Korean War began and he was drafted into the U. S. Marine Corps where he served in Korea. Upon his discharge from the Marine Corps, he returned to Morgantown and enrolled in the physics program at West Virginia University with the financial aid of the GI Bill. He graduated from WVU with Bachelor of Arts and Master of Science Degrees then began working for the Federal Air Pollution program in Cincinnati, OH. After working ten years in Cincinnati, he was transferred to the newly formed Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) whish was located in the research triangle in North Carolina. A charter member of the EPA, he moved to Durham, NC to be near his new work place in the park. He worked for the EPA for 24 years before retiring in 1994. After retirement, he moved to Hampton, VA to be closer to family members. In 2007, health problems led him to the Mennowood Retirement Community in Newport News where he received wonderful care. Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Orval and Pearl Conner; and his brother, Roy Conner. Surviving are two nieces, Donna Matney of Newport News and Brenda Robertson of Yorktown; two nephews, David Conner of Lanexa, VA and Stephen Conner of Hampton. He also has several cousins in Northern WV and Western PA. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. The family wishes to thank the staff at Mennowood Retirement Community and Personal Touch Hospice for all of the Care and Kindness shown to Billy. The family wishes expression of sympathy to take the form of contributions to the , 11835 Canon Blvd, Ste. A102, Newport News, VA 23606.
