IN LOVING MEMORY OF
William S.
Bloodgood, Jr.
December 15, 1934 – May 17, 2024
William S. Bloodgood, Jr., 89, went to be with the Lord peacefully, Friday, May 17, 2024.
Born in Hampton in 1934, he was a lifelong resident of Hampton Roads and a member and former Trustee of Central United Methodist Church. He served in the Navy for four years then went on to graduate from Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1964 with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering. His career in government service began with the Army Corps of Engineers. He spent several years with LANTDIV at Norfolk Naval before moving on to the U.S. Coast Guard where he retired in 1996.
His passion was sailing the Chesapeake Bay and beyond with his wife and co-pilot, Hildegard, on their sailboat, Sea Gypsy. Many will miss his unique sense of humor and recollections of the countless adventures (and mishaps) he and his copilot shared on both sea and land.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Catherine Bloodgood, his sister, Norma Masters and cousin Shirley Becker. He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Hildegard Bloodgood; his children, Amanda Bloodgood (husband, Jim Corton), Wayne Wyatt Bloodgood, Maria Combs, and James Rowland (wife, Tina); three grandchildren, Mason Combs, Alexander Rowland, and Nicholas Rowland; brother-in-law Billy Masters; his nephew, niece, and cousins; and his beloved dog, Diki.
A memorial service with Navy honors will be conducted at 3pm on June 8th at Central United Methodist Church.
The family requests for anyone who would like to make a contribution in his memory to be made directly to Central United Methodist Church, 225 Chapel Street, Hampton, VA 23669.
