Obituary

Wanda Lane Jones departed this earthly world peacefully in her home on the evening of Palm Sunday, March 20, 2016, after a lengthy illness, surrounded by loving family members. Without a doubt she now resides in Heaven in eternal peace.

Wanda was the daughter of Frances Lane and the late Hubert Lane. Besides her mother, she is survived and mourned by her immediate family: husband Bob Jones, son Mason Jones and sister Cheryl Wittmann. In addition to her father, Wanda was preceded in death by her brother Rhett Lane. Coupled with family members she is also mourned by many close friends locally as well as thousands nationwide who were touched by her kindness and unique personality.

Born and raised for the most part in Florence, South Carolina, she was a resident of Hampton for over 30 years. She loved this city and its people. She fought for the rights of those less fortunate, especially in the areas of public education and the education of those in need of organ transplants. Wanda never met a stranger. She had the ability to speak with Kings, Queens and Doctors with grace and charm. She was always the first to respond to anyone in need and was loved by all who knew her. She was indeed a peacock in a duck's world.

Her loving son Mason Jones perhaps best summarized his Mother's life as follows:

She was the life of every party, always smiling or laughing.
She remains the shining example of true Southern hospitality.
She was a protector of her family and friends.
She was a mother to those who did not have one.
She was extremely charitable, always looking to help others.
She had a tireless generous spirit.
She was an excellent listener and comforter.
She could find the positives in any situation.
She was artistic, an avid decorator, a walking fashion statement, a lover of good music as well as good times and quite the green thumb.
She worked for the school system to change kids' lives and make a positive difference.
She knew the value of life and never took it for granted.
She will live on in the hearts of her friends, family and all those she touched.

A celebration of Wanda's life will be held at a time and place to be determined by her family. If desired, memorial contributions may be made in her name to the United Network for Organ Sharing located in Richmond, VA.
