Obituary

Wallace "Wally" Morgan, Jr., 73, at last gave up the 10-year, "good fight" with colorectal cancer on June 17, 2022. He was the husband of Barbara (Wilt) and father of Michael Wallace Morgan.

Wally was born and raised in the Milwaukee, WI area, the son of Wallace, Sr. and Genevieve (Sixt) and brother to Dennis. He was known as "Junior" to the Morgan family. One day after graduating from high school in 1966 he signed up to join the US Navy Submarine Service, serving six years from 1967 – 1972. He achieved the rank of First-Class Petty Officer in 3 years, serving on the USS Ray SSN 653, nuclear fast-attack submarine, where he operated as a Sonar Technician, fulfilling a boyhood dream ever since an uncle coached him into being an Amateur Ham Radio Operator when he was 12 years old. His ham radio hobby also interestingly gave him the opportunity to be the first one in his high school to actually hear and know of the rock band, The Beatles, having been able to tune into broadcasts of them in England before they invaded the U.S. when Beatlemania soon spread throughout the world. This also somewhat inspired his son, Mike, to be a musician. Wally remained active as a Ham Operator until this past year when he donated his substantial equipment collection, including vacuum tube models, to the local SPARK – Southern Peninsula Amateur Radio Klub.

He remained in Virginia after leaving the Navy, met and married Barbara K. Wilt in 1975 and they lived in Hampton for the remainder of his life, parenting their son, Mike. Wally was a dedicated father, serving as a Boy Scout leader and life-friend and mentor with whom he would frequently play "catch" in their spare time.

He had a love of baseball and football that originated in his hometown upbringing where he became a fan of the Milwaukee Braves (now the Brewers) and Green Bay Packers. Once he eventually settled in Hampton, VA, Wally also became a Washington Redskins fan (now the Commanders) which influenced his son Mike to also become a fan. Having honeymooned in New Orleans with Barbara, his unique admiration for Jazz also made a musical impact on Mike from later family visits to the Crescent City.

Wally's professional life grew from his early technical interest. He started as an electronics technician at Tidewater Electronics and then on to Priest Electronics and WVEC-TV. Later, Hastings - Raydist offered him opportunity to travel worldwide until he took advantage of the rising CB radio craze and started his own business, Morgan Communications. As the world changed with computer technology, he tackled website development at nView, InfiNet and Great Bridge, finally managing Fremont Die Consumer Products (2001) until his cancer progression – along with COVID – made it clear it was time for him to retire in 2020.

Predeceased by his parent, Wally is survived by his wife, Barbara; son Mike; brother Dennis; and his beloved dog of 17 years, Minnie.

Special gratitude has been earned by Personal Touch Home Care and Dr. Scott Kruger, Oncologist.
