Virginia Dare Cheesman Johnston, 95, went to be with her Lord and Savior on June 28, 2017.
Born in Newport News, Virginia on January 31, 1922, she was a long-time resident of Phoebus in her younger years and of Hampton since 1972. Virginia was employed by Maida Development Company for 27 years, retiring in 1981. A member of Hampton Baptist Church, she was a joyful member of the church choir and the Victory Singers for many years.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Katherine O'Neill and A. B. Cheesman, her husband, Wilson Johnston, Sr., son, Richard Johnston, Sr., daughters, Barbara Bradley and Sheila Clardy, and her sisters, Ida Hansford and Emma Patrick.
Virginia is survived by sons, Cecil of Hampton, Harry (Brenda) of Lanexa, Wilson Jr. (Pat) of Toano, daughter, Bettie Kirkhart of Jacksonville, FL and daughter-in-law, Alice Johnston of Hampton, 18 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Monday, July 3, 2017 at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home, Hampton, by Rev. Dr. Betty Pugh Mills and Rev. Dr. Chester Brown. Interment will follow at Hampton National Cemetery, Phoebus Section. The family will receive friends Sunday, July 2 from 5:00 – 7:00 PM at the funeral home. www.rhaydensmith.com.
