Obituary

Vincent Joseph Sherman, a beloved husband, father of two and grandfather of five, was a man dedicated to his family, his country and his faith. Vince passed away this past weekend at the age of 79. Born on June 23, 1935, in Queens, New York, to the late Frank and Eileen Sherman, he was the middle of three brothers. Vince graduated from Regis High School and Fordham University in New York City before joining the United States Air Force, and he later received a masters degree from George Washington University. During a long and successful military career that involved assignments in North America, Europe and Asia, Vince launched the first Scout missile, served in Vietnam, taught at the United States Air Force Air Command and Staff College, and headed Intelligence for Tactical Air Command before retiring in as a Colonel. Vince met his wife, Lorna Mae Laude, in 1960 while working at Grand Forks Air Force Base in North Dakota. He was a junior officer and squadron commander; she was a civilian secretary to the wing commander. They were married on May 5, 1962. Vince and Lorna raised two children, Vincent Paul Sherman who was born in Alabama in 1968 and Teresa Vinee Sherman, who was born the following year in Maryland. Lorna passed away in 2008. After his family and his work, Vince loved to read, play bridge, travel and finish crossword puzzles with his wife. He was active in the Catholic church and served as a Lay Eucharistic Minister. Vince is survived by his son, Vince and his wife, Elycia; his daughter, Teri Gendron and her husband, Rich; five grandchildren, Kristian, Richard, Paige, Lauren and Brooke; and his younger brother, the Rev. Msgr. Anthony F. Sherman, the pastor of Saint Anastasia Roman Catholic Church in Douglaston, New York. The family will have viewing and visitation from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. this Thursday, November 20 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 514 Buckroe Avenue. Immediately following, at 11:30 a.m., a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Msgr. Sherman, with a reception to follow at Berceuse Funeral and Cremation Traditions, 2609 Cunningham Drive, Hampton. Interment with full military honors will occur at a date to be determined in Arlington National Cemetery.
