Obituary

Verna Schmidt died on Tuesday, June 24, 2014 at age 102. She was born in Wallace, Idaho in 1911, the oldest of 9 children born to Hugh Andrew and Lydia B. Stephenson. She lived in Glade Spring, VA from age four until she moved to the Peninsula in 1951 when she married Henry Schmidt (Babe), a friend from her teenage years. She was preceded in death by her parents, five siblings, four husbands, a daughter, Edith Mize, and a grandson, Kenny Mize. She is survived by two daughters, Betty Lowe and Doris Moore both of Hampton; one brother, Bill Stephenson; two sisters, Hallie White and Evelyn Hurley; eight grandchildren; and a host of great and great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Verna had attended Aldersgate United Methodist Church where she made many friends. She retired from Maida Development after 20 years of service. She enjoyed gardening, family gatherings, and traveling. The family wishes to express their gratitude to the staff at James River Convalescent Center for their caring and kindness to our mom during her stay there. The family will receive friends at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home on Friday, June 27 from 1:00 -2:30 PM. The funeral service will follow at 2:30 with the Revs. Ed and Libby Wright officiating. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Aldersgate United Methodist Church, 151 Wythe Parkway, Hampton, VA 23661.
