Valesha Sue Mayo, 65, passed away Monday, November 2, 2015. A lifelong resident of the Peninsula, she retired in 1995 as a Police Officer after 23 years of dedication to the Newport News Police Department. She was the first female officer ever to serve with NNPD. After retirement she went to work at Riverside Regional Medical Center as an ICU unit secretary, retiring again in 2015. Mrs. Mayo was preceded in death by her parents, Caroline and Harrison Riley; and brothers Neil and Buddy Harrison. Surviving are her husband of 22 years, Ronald Lee Mayo; sons, Kevin Patrick Evans and his wife Melissa and Jonathan C. Evans and his wife April of James City County; sister Margaret Elleen Yun of Newport News; and grandchildren, Merissa Che Evans and Kara Isabella Evans. The family wishes any memorial contributions to go to any "No Kill" animal shelter you wish.
