Vada Louise Matherly, 81, died Friday, March 7, 2014. A native of Trout, WV, she had been a Hampton resident since 1956 where she was a devoted member of Fox Hill Road Baptist Church. She taught Sunday school, was a Deacon, and participated in the outreach program, wherever the Lord called her to help. She also taught Sunday school at Shelton on the Bay. She retired as Office Manager from OB/Gyn Clinic after 30 years of service. A talented knitter, she made hats for cancer patients and companioned them during their illness. She loved being in her backyard, gardening and enjoying her koi pond.
Preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Harold T. Matherly; survivors include her children, Edward Matherly of Hampton, Karen "Sissy" Wilson of Utah, Lois Ann Lewis of Oregon, and Thomas Matherly and his wife, Carol of Texas; fourteen grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; a brother, Robert E. Williams and his wife, Christine of Utah; and a sister, Nadine W. Brackenrich of West Virginia.
She was always supportive of her children and grandchildren in all of their endeavors and they will miss her terribly.
The family will receive friends from 11:00am-1:00pm Wednesday, March 12, 2014 at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home with a funeral service beginning at 1:00 in the chapel conducted by Rev. Thomas Larson. Interment will follow in Parklawn Memorial Park.
Memorials may be made to H.E.L.P., P.O. Box 190, Hampton, VA 23669 in honor of the help she gave to the homeless.
