Obituary

Tyrus (Chris) Christy Matthews passed away on December 22, 2015.  He is proceeded in death by his parents Tonie L Matthews & Sarah V Matthews and his son in-law Russell Myers.  He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Joyce Gay Matthews; three children, Vickie Matthews Myers, Lee Matthews and wife Christine, and David Matthews; two grandchildren Andrew Myers and Mallory Christy Matthews; sister Christine Byrd and a large extended family.

Chris was born in Rocky Mount, NC. and graduated from Ahoskie High School in 1949.  He played Third Base for the Ahoskie Indians baseball team, throwing right-handed and batting left-handed.

In 1953 he worked at Newport Newport Shipbuilding as a materials handler.  Then in 1954 he was drafted into the Army, and was stationed in Fort Jackson, SC.  and Fort Knox, KY.   After his honorable discharge from the Army, Chris returned to work at the shipyard and retired in 1990 after 37 years as an Outside Machinist (X43) where he participated in many SS United States overhauls, the Forrestal Aircraft Carrier sea trials, and helped build several Nuclear Aircraft Carriers during his career.

Chris was a well known local guitarist, and formed the band "Original Country", a Country/Gospel Band, with his friend Charlie Crane.  They played for several organizations around the Peninsula, including the Virginia C.B. Club, Moose Clubs, and various other organizations, including charities and churches.  He also filled in on guitar and bass guitar for various other bands in the area.

Chris was also an avid baseball fan and never missed a Baltimore Orioles game.  He passed on his love of baseball to his grandson Andrew and coached his little league teams at Parkview Little League.

He could fix anything mechanical, loved to fish for flounder, spot and croaker, and was a North Carolina BBQ connoisseur!

The family has decided to have a private family memorial, and has requested privacy during this time.  In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to your favorite charity, or to the Pine Chapel Baptist Church (Hampton) building fund.
