Thomas Cary Moore, Jr. was born on January 25, 1934 in Raleigh, NC, the son of Thomas Cary Moore and Ethel Glass Moore. He died in Richmond on January 9, 2022.
Tommy graduated from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill and served two years in the Army, based in Germany. He remained a lifelong Tar Heel and patriot. He had a long and successful career as a Certified Public Accountant and small business owner, beginning with A.M. Pullen in Charlotte, NC in 1958. In 1961 he moved to Hampton, where his career progressed from Horne Brothers Shipbuilding to owner of The Rental Center to comptroller of WVEC. His final (and proudest) job was as the owner of MGI Burglar and Fire Alarm company, which was like a home away from home and a second family.
After retiring in 1995, Tommy spent ten years in Chincoteague and then ten years in Smithfield, before moving to Richmond in 2015. Tommy loved being outdoors, building things with his hands, and practicing new cuss words during UNC basketball games.
Tommy was preceded in death by his parents, by his sisters Barbara Moore Madigan and Kathryn Dena Moore, and by his wife and mother of his children, Wayne Frances Hart Moore.
He is survived by his wife, Betty Jean Moore, his children Michael Thomas Moore (Kim), Kay Moore Carey (Pat), Christopher John Moore (Dena), and Benjamin Murray Moore (Marlene), his step-children Mark Heath Tolson and Kim Tolson Rave (Mark), his grandchildren Shea Michael Tolson, Sydney Smith (Charles), Amy Bredehoft (Pierre), Benjamin Connor Moore, Christopher John Rave, and Samuel Hart Moore, and his great-grandchildren Thomas Colon and Ethan Colon.
The family will receive friends Thursday from 10-10:45 AM at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home, 245 S. Armistead Avenue, Hampton, VA 23669. A graveside service will immediately follow at 11:00 AM at St. John's Episcopal Church Cemetery, 100 W. Queens Way, Hampton, VA 23669.
In lieu of flowers, Tommy's family requests that you consider a contribution to a cancer or Alzheimer's charity of your choice.
