IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Thomas Edwards
Joyner
April 29, 1945 – September 7, 2025
On September 7, 2025, Thomas Edwards Joyner passed away peacefully at home. He was a lifelong Hamptonian. He graduated from Hampton High School and Old Dominion University.
Tom had a 30-year career as President of Monette Information Systems in Smithfield, VA.
Tom was a talented musician and was blessed with a beautiful voice. He was appearing at local events on the Peninsula starting at age four. He sang at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in their folk music group for many years. He was a blessing to hear.
Tom was an avid sports enthusiast and in particular a die-hard supporter of the Washington Commanders and LA Dodgers. He had a passion for sailing; Tom purchased a sailboat and enjoyed the Hampton Roads waters for many years.
He developed a skill for cooking and in the early morning hours he could be found at the local markets shopping for fresh ingredients for the night's dinner. Sunday night family dinners were his forte.
Tom was predeceased by his parents Thomas J. and Lucille Edwards Joyner and his sister Nancy L Joyner. He is survived by his wife Mary Liakos Joyner, his children Dana E.Joyner, Matthew T. Joyner (Kara Moen), Nathaniel E. Joyner and eight grandchildren: Zachary, Grace, Lily, Jackson, Luke, Riley, Adrian, and Levi, also special family friend Karen Smith as well as a large extended family.
Tom's family wishes to extend our sincerest appreciation to VOA, especially Dr. Jared Kobulnicky (who Tom had on speed dial) and his staff at the Hampton office. Eventually when Heartland Hospice services were necessary, everything Tom needed was provided from nursing care to emotional support.
Tom was a loving husband & best friend for sixty-one years (9/5/64-9/7/25). He was a wonderful father, mentor, and a most doting grandfather. Pop will be truly missed. We look forward to hearing and telling stories with friends and family about Tom remembering him in his vim & vigor.
Visitation for family and friends will be held Thursday, September 18, 2025, from 10 AM until 11:30 AM at R. Hayden Smith, 245 S. Armistead Ave, Hampton, VA 23669.
