Born in Newport News to Walter and Louise Deuell, Tom spent most of his life in Hampton, where he built a life defined by service, dedication, and quiet strength. He proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps before pursuing a degree in Fire Science from Thomas Nelson Community College. Tom went on to serve the City of Hampton Fire Department with distinction, retiring as a Lieutenant after a long and honorable career. His commitment to the fire service continued throughout his life as a devoted, life member of the Fox Hill Volunteer Fire Company When he wasn't serving others, Tom found joy in hunting, traveling, and spending time with those he loved most.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Louise Deuell. Left to cherish his memory are his beloved wife of 58 years, Judy Lawson Deuell; his sons, Christopher T. Deuell and his wife, Brenda, and R. Brandon Deuell; his grandsons, Christopher "Todd" Deuell, Jr. and Brian C. Deuell; his great-grandsons, Christopher Deuell, Oliver Carlile, and Atlas Deuell; his brother-in-law, John Lawson; along with many extended family members and dear friends who will forever remember his kindness, loyalty, and unwavering dedication to family and community.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Tom's devoted daughter-in-law, Brenda Deuell, whose love, compassionate care, and nurse's heart were instrumental in making it possible for Tom to remain comfortable at home. They also wish to express their sincere appreciation to Wings Over Virginia Hospice, especially Terry and Felicia, for the exceptional care, kindness, and support they provided to both Tom and his family.

A memorial service celebrating Tom's life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, August 10, 2026, at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home, downtown Hampton. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 1:00 until 2:00 p.m., one hour prior to the service.
