Obituary
Thelma Goodwin passed away peacefully on Friday, December 29, 2017 at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. Thelma was born on April 24, 1928 in New York City to Theodore and Carrie Brice Cobbs. Sadly, Thelma's mother and twin sister died before leaving the hospital. In addition to her mother and twin sister, Thelma was preceded in death by her father, Theodore Cobbs; her son, Stephen Goodwin; three sisters, two brothers; and close friends, Euperta Gaston and Josephine Major. Survivors include her sister, Vivian Cobbs, Goddaughter, Michele Sydney (Vincent) and Michele's brother, Alexander Gaston; and dear friend, Evangeline Ward.
Thelma earned her B.A. degree from The City College of New York and employed with Internal Revenue Service for 33 years until her retirement in April 1984. Years later, Thelma relocated to Raleigh, North Carolina and just over three years ago, she relocated to Hampton, Virginia.
A memorial service celebrating Thelm'a life will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, January 20, 2018 at Berceuse Funeral and Cremation Traditions, 2609 Cunningham Drive, Hampton, VA. Interment will be at a later date at the Hampton Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in her name to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or the American Cancer Society, 11835 Canon Blvd a102, Newport News, VA 23606.
