Obituary

Teresa D. Matteson, 95, died January 6, 2018, the day St. Peter needed a bridge partner. Tess was born on August 11, 1922 in the Bronx, New York, the daughter of Salvatore and Giselda D'Agostini. She was preceded in death by a sister Rina and husband Marshall. She is survived by a daughter Tyla Matteson and her husband, Glen Besa of Richmond, VA. She is also survived by a son Guy "Matt" Matteson and his wife Ann of Hendersonville, NC, grandsons Tory Matteson of Broomfield, CO, wife Brittany and their daughter, Charlotte and grandson Adam Matteson of Shanghai, China. A military wife and resident of Hampton for 56 years, Tess never knew a stranger, loved the outdoors and continually volunteered her time and resources to protect local natural areas. She was the inspiration for the Matteson Trail, Hampton's three-mile fitness trail and was pleased that people could enjoy the hundreds of daffodils she planted. Tess was a lifelong learner, a generous supporter of local schools and colleges, a naturalist, an avid birder, an explorer, a cat lover, and a wellness fanatic, swimming daily well into her 90s. The family requests that expression of sympathy be made to the Animal Aid Society in Hampton or your favorite charity. R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home is handling arrangements. Friends and family may use dailypress.com to post condolences.
