It is with deep sadness and wonderful memories, that we announce the passing of Susie Marcell Whisnant Reade, 81 years old, in the early morning hours of November 30, 2023 at Mary Immaculate Hospital.

Susie was born on June 3, 1942 in Boiling Springs, NC the second of 4 children to Blane and Alden Whisnant. She attended Appalachian State University and obtained her Masters there as well. She began teaching in Salisbury, NC and then moved to Hampton in 1968. She continued to teach in the Hampton City School System through retirement, first at the former Pembroke High School, then Spratley Middle School.  An avid reader since childhood, she was a proud librarian, reading and technology specialist, always encouraging children and their growth through books.

Throughout those years, in her spare time she was a dedicated dance mom and, with her husband and later her daughter and son-in-law, Susie was also an extremely successful business owner of Reade Enterprises, partnered with the Amway Corporation, mentoring many. She and her daughter later started the award-winning onsite beauty division of their family business, Best Face Forward- Skin, Makeup & Hair Artists. She was proud of their company to continue to be a part of so many special events for so many people and loved cheering on our talented Artists. She also enjoyed traveling many places all over the world with her sisters-in-law Sharon and Jen, and a fun group of travel friends. When home she was reading, finishing a crossword puzzle, pulling out magazine articles to give to Kara, and spending time with her Red Hat Society ladies (known to them as Princess Bookie).

Susie was preceded in passing by her parents Blane and Alden, brother Eddy and sister Joyce and we're sure they are all now reunited. She is survived by her adoring husband of 52 years Martin Page Reade, daughter Kara Reade Gomez (Jo), grandchildren Cruz (her sweet boy) and Lola (her silly girl) and her Grandbunny Winnie. Additional loving family who will be missing her presence most include her niece Rinda Albert (Marty, Mike & Amanda), her brother Ted (Susan) of Marion, SC, and many additional adoring nieces, nephew and all of Martin's relatives. She leaves behind many friends, former co-workers, business partners and traveling buddies to carry on her memory

The family chose for Susie to be privately cremated and brought home in a special resting place to be with Martin after a long hospitalization. A celebration of life is in the works and all are invited to attend to share great memories and stories of Susie when details are released. An endowment in her name with the Hampton Public Library Foundation is also in process to continue her legacy. We kindly request all donations be made to that endowment once details are finalized.
