Susan Lee Giles Gatling, passed peacefully into the arms of the Lord with her family at her side on February 12, 2023. She fought for 14 years following the sudden onset of an illness - long enough to see her grandchildren born and watch them grow - which was her dream. She was born May 22, 1946 at Maryview Hospital to mother, Julia Crumpler Gurganus. Her mother later married Aubrey T. Giles Jr. and Susan was adopted by Mr. Giles. Susan graduated from Maury High School in 1964 and then graduated from Norfolk General Hospital's School of X Ray Technology in 1966. She went on to work at Maryview Hospital before marrying Lt. James F Mowbray in 1968. They moved to Monterey, California and had a son, James T. Mowbray. They mutually parted ways and Susan moved back to Tidewater where she spent the remainder of her life. While taking flying lessons in Virginia, Susan met the love of her life. She married James Randolph Gatling in 1981 and they enjoyed almost 42 years of marriage; their 42 nd wedding anniversary would have been February 14. Susan dedicated 42 years to her profession; Mammography; as a Xray Technician. Susan was known to be a generous soul, always helping others around her. She loved being around the water, sailing, flying, going to movies, everything chocolate, and attending Western Branch Community Church.
Susan was preceded in death by her mother, Julia C. Giles; father, Aubrey T. Giles Jr.; and her grandmother, Esther Weymouth Dickens Crumpler; grandfather, James Newton Crumpler, Sr; grandmother, Catherine Anderson Giles; grandfather, Aubrey Thomas Giles Sr.; brothers, James Newton Crumpler, Jr, Weymouth Bridgers Crumpler, Thomas Dickens Crumpler, and Nelson Collingwood Crumpler.
She is survived by her husband, James Randolph Gatling; former husband James F Mowbray; son, James T. Mowbray (Victoria) and their son Parker Mowbray; daughter, Erin P. Gatling (Casey Schilling) and their children, Gunner G. Schilling and Paige S. Schilling; sister, Ann G. Manning; niece, Catherine M. McCourt; nephew, William T. Manning; cousins, Gale C. Winter and Ellen C. Braman; aunts, Barbara Giles and Betty Giles; cousins, William T. Giles and Terri J. Giles; brother-in-law, Richard Gatling (Sandra); nieces, Carly Hutto, Jennifer Franklin, and Jill Salanga; sister-in-law, Catherine Worley (Jim); nephews Jeremy Worley, Jason Worley and Jarrod Worley; sister-in-law Dorothy Russell; niece Jamie Albano and nephew Jim Albano; and many great nieces and nephews.
