Susan Elaine Barnett, 65, passed away peacefully on April 12, 2024, at Norfolk General Hospital, after a short illness, surrounded by her loving family.
Susan was born on July 25, 1958, in Jacksonville, NC to Virgina Carol Ivey and Capt. James W. Ivey, USMC Retired. She was preceded in death by Frank and Tressie Ivey (paternal grandparents), H. C. and Venia Bowling (maternal grandparents), and Katherine Marie Barnett (daughter). Those left to cherish her memory are husband of 45 years, John Anthony Barnett; four daughters, Elizabeth Mary (Jason) Barnett, Jennifer May (Martin) Schulter, Victoria Ann Barnett, and Jacqueline Marie Barnett; twelve grandchildren, Tabatha (Stephen) Havunen, Daniel Barnett, Christina (John) Hoffmann, Cody Sheets, Bradley Barnett, John Barnett II, Vivien Mavridis, Jalaina Barnett-Wilson, Delvina Wilson, Philip Mavridis, Nathaniel Barnett-Jones, and Anna Schulter; two great-grandchildren, Tobias Hoffmann and Addilyn Havunen; parents, Virgina Carol Ivey and Capt. James W. Ivey, USMC Ret.; three siblings, Walter (Dyann) Ivey, Donna Weinert and Amos Ivey. Susan had many bonus children, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Known by family and friends as Suzy, she was a 1976 graduate of Battery Creek High School in Beaufort, SC. She married John A. Barnett on February 25, 1979, in Beaufort, SC. As a proud Dandelion (Military Brat), Suzy lived in many places growing up, including Camp Lejeune, NC, Triangle, VA, Midland, MI, Bridgeton, NC and Beaufort, SC. She moved to Hampton, VA in 1981, where she remained a proud resident.
As a young mother, Susan was a full-time homemaker until her youngest daughter went to school. She was a long-time supervisor at Maida Development for nearly 20 years; and retired from Alorica as a claims agent in 2023. As a dedicated mother, Susan coached her daughters in Girl Scouts, cheerleading and softball. As a supportive wife, Susan volunteered for the Phoebus Fire Department Woman's Auxiliary throughout the 30 plus years her husband volunteered, as well as serving on the board of the Phoebus Little League.
Family, friends, and others are invited to R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home, 245 Armistead Ave., Hampton, VA from 6pm to 8pm on Monday, April 22, 2024. As well as a celebration of life at Y.H. Thomas Community Center at 1300 Thomas St. Hampton, VA 23669 on Tuesday, April 23, 2024, from 3:30pm to 5:30pm to reminisce and honor the life of Susan E. Barnett.
