Stephen James Smith "Smitty/Pops", 72, of Hampton, Virginia passed away peacefully at home on March 2, 2025.  The son of Fred and June Smith, he was born on March 29, 1953, in Lawrence, Massachusetts.

Growing up in Methuen, MA, he went to technical school for carpentry.  Always a patriot, he joined the Air Force in 1973 which took him to New Mexico, Okinawa, and finally Hampton.  Steve retired from the Air Force in 1993 but continued to work on Langley Air Force Base as a civilian until he fully retired in 2010.

Steve thoroughly enjoyed his retirement; breakfast at Hardees with the guys, boat rides in the bay, cruises to the Caribbean, lounging in the pool, tinkering in his garage, and working in his garden with his wife.  He drove to Richmond every Wednesday morning to watch grandbabies for over 12 years and only stopped when his health prevented it.  Even then, he and his wife were often to be found at a grandchild's sporting event on any given weekend.

Steve is survived and missed by his wife of 39 years, Sharon Smith; daughter, Leslie Daughtry (Will Daughtry); son, Russell Smith (Anne Smith); son, Joshua Smith (Amy Smith); and sister, Kathleen Bartlett (Bob). Steve was the proud grandfather of Natalie, Liam, Wyatt, Henry, Ruby, and Alice.

He will be remembered as an incredibly loving and dedicated husband, father, grandfather, and friend – He will be greatly missed.

A private service will be held for immediate family members.
