Obituary

Starla (Star) Hardin Gates, 61, passed away peacefully in her sleep on July 19, 2025.  Born in Shelby, NC, she has been a resident of Willoughby Spit since 1995

Star is survived by her husband, Geoffrey Gates; mother-in-law, Margery Gates;  daughter, Jessie Arrand Galano (Mike); grandchildren, Jo Arrand Jane Galano, Drusilla Grace Galano; brother, Chris Hardin (Karen); nephews, Josh Hardin, Jason Hardin and niece, Brooke Maples.

Star was a beautiful soul who loved the beach, her family and always found happiness in the dark times. She created a life with Geoff that gave the strength that both needed to overcome anything, as well as the heart to share it with family and friends. She will always be loved and in the hearts of many.

Star loved deeply. She always had a smile and laughter that lit up a room. As well as having a beautiful singing voice, Star was an avid beach goer and life of the party. She would swim in the bay, tell stories where everyone was laughing and just relax and soak in the sun's beautiful rays. The more people around would mean the more people who she loved to make laugh. Star would always try to get to know the real you and open her heart. She always felt warm to be around and this is something she carried on until her passing.

Star loved her grandchildren and always created a safe space for them to be creative and loved as well as many other children over the years who needed that. She will always be remembered when feeling the breeze on the beach, sand on your feet and cool water of the bay. This Star will always shine bright in Willoughby Spit.

"When I am afraid, I put my trust in you" Psalm 56:3
