Stafford Littleton Bassett, II, died Monday, November 9, 2015. Born in the old Buxton Hospital, Newport News, Virginia, on Oct 7, 1937 to Stafford L Bassett Sr. and Ina Smith Bassett. Stafford graduated from Hampton High School in 1957. He attended Fork Union Military Acadamy and Old Dominion Technical College. He was firstly a musician, a master of acoustic and electric guitars, and a lover of all fine music. He and his high school friends, Punchy Bulifant, Mac Ragland, and Johnny Anderson auditioned for the Ed Sullivan Show in Phoebus in the 50's. He played his Gretch guitar in The Eddie Travis Band at Buckroe Beach Amusement Park.Stafford retired from the Newport News Shipbuilding in 1998. He was the Captain of The Thimble Shoals for the Virginia Marine Resources Commission, a member of the Virginia National Guard, American Legion Post 48, volunteered at the Hampton VA, and was an election official at the Buckroe Precinct. Survived by his wife of 57 years, Mary Lee Bassett, his sons Brian Patrick Bassett, Jay Stafford Bassettand wife Donna, grandchildren Joseph Patrick Bassett and Virginia Lee Bassett; step-grandchildren, Tanner Knecht and Jessica Knecht. A memorial service will be held at American Legion Post 48, Phoebus, at 4pm on November 16 with reception to follow.
