Cutler Wells
February 16, 1932 – September 5, 2020
Shirley Mae Cutler Wells, 88, of Hampton was given eternal peace by God on Saturday, September 5, 2020. Shirley was born and raised in the Camp Leach area of Washington, North Carolina. She moved to the Hampton Roads area in 1950. On September 17, 1962 she was married to Mack Wells, and until his demise, were together for 42 years.
Very active in her community, she worked tirelessly with the Hampton Fire Department where her husband, Mack, worked. Shirley was a lifetime member of the American Legion Women's Auxiliary Post 48 in Phoebus, where she served in many different capacities. She was also a bus driver for the City of Hampton for 41 years.
Preceded in death by her husband, Mack Wells; her son Robert Macklin Wells; her mother Laura Katherine Cutler; her father Adrian Thorn Cutler; her brother Adrian Thorn Cutler, Jr.; and her grandson David Aaron Fritzler II; she is survived by her daughters, Anita Charnock and her husband William, Juanita Fritzler, Vera Parrish, and Tammy Hannum; and her sons Carlton Wells and Eric Wells; grandchildren Laura Charnock, Brandon Fritzler and his wife Mary, Katie Fritzler and her husband D.R. Alligood, Megan Koger and her husband Jacob, Wiley Parrish, Joey Wells and his wife DeAnna, Adrian Wells, Jacob Wells, Stephanie Wells and John Murphy, Dylan Wells, Brenden Wells, and Nathan Wells; her great grandchildren Maria Fritzler, Nevaeh Murphy, Isaiah Murphy, Jeremiah Murphy, Riley Pierce, and Layla Koger, and Zachary Wells.
The family will receive friends from 3:00-4:30 pm, Tuesday, September 8, 2020 at R. Hayden Funeral Home. A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 pm, Wednesday, September 9 at Emmanuel Episcopal Church with Rev. Rhonda Wheeler officiating. Burial will follow in Peninsula Memorial Park. The family requests that memorials be in the form of contributions to The American Legion Women's Auxiliary Post 48, in Phoebus, VA and Cross and Crown Mission Clinic in Oklahoma City, OK.
