Shirley Burt was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and sister. She celebrated her 60th anniversary with her husband just last year. Shirley spent many years as a cosmetologist and as a bus driver in the Hampton Roads area, offering earnest care and a meaningful conversation to her clients and passengers. She had a special place in her heart for Shelties, who were her faithful companions throughout her life. Some of her favorite days were spent in Nags Head, North Carolina, where her family owned a cottage since the 1890's. She grew up visiting the cottage and got to share this tradition with numerous family members and friends throughout her life. Shirley was a one-of-a-kind loyal friend, forever offering a warm hug and kiss, an incredibly witty sense of humor, and always up for an adventure. Her friendships have lasted a lifetime because of her passionate and loving heart that had room for all who came into her life. She showed immense pride for her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Shirley shared a love with her husband that began in their teens, and never dulled. She will be sorely missed, though her loving impact on the world will shine on through all who knew her. We will carry her memory in our hearts.
Shirley is survived by her husband, James G. Burt; her children, Teresa Johnson (Robert), James M. Burt, and Kevin P. Burt (Mandy), her brother, Frank Spencer; eight grandchildren, Jenna, Ellie, James, Teale, Derek, Logan, Carol Ann, and Hallie; and two great-grandchildren, Waylon and Karson.
A funeral service will be conducted at 2:30 PM Sunday, August 25, 2024, in the R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home chapel.
