Shirley Ann McDermon Bennett, 78, passed away on Feb 26, 2015 after a long illness with her family by her side. Shirley was the daughter of the late Joseph William McDermon and the late Nan Louise Faulkner. She was also the step-daughter of the late Jack Faulkner. A lifelong resident of Hampton, Shirley attended Hampton High School. She served as the president of the Phoebus Elementary PTA. There she led clothing drives for victims of the Ash Wednesday Storm in 1962 as well as the plane crash in 1966. For years she worked in the offices of Dr. William Perlman and for Dr. Ed Burdick. She was owner of Buckroe Swap Shop and a plastercraft shop in the Buckroe Shopping Center. She was a deaconess emeritus of Hampton Christian Church and loved teaching the youth about the love of Jesus in Sunday school for many years until a debilitating stroke ended her church participation. Shirley was preceded in death by her daughter-in-law, Linda Bennett. She is survived by her husband, Richard Bennett; son, Rusty Bennett of Vero Beach, Florida; daughters, Donna Blake (Donald) and Cheryl Cosentino(Thomas) of Hampton. She is also survived by her sister, Jacqueline Keller of Newport News; grandsons, Drew Bennett and Donald "DJ" Blake,Jr., William Cosentino, and Dainton Cosentino; grand-daughters, Dawn Taylor, Christina Ribblett, and Devin Wilson, six great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. A service in the memory of Shirley will be held on Tuesday, March 3 at 7 pm at Hampton Christian Church.
