Obituary

Sharon Chambers Burton, 79, passed away March 8, 2023. Sharon, a loving and devoted wife, mother, and grandmother was a native of Jonesville, VA and lived there throughout her childhood. She attended college at Emory and Henry where she played basketball and graduated with a dual degree in History and English. After graduating, she moved across state to teach English and History at Denbigh High School in Newport News, VA. While living in Newport News, she met her husband of fifty-six years, Albert Paul Burton Jr. They had a special love for one another that lasted a lifetime. Several years later, their daughter was born and Sharon opted to stay home and dedicate her time to family. Soon after, their son was born.

Sharon was a member of the Junior Woman's Club and volunteered at Hampton General Hospital. She was a devoted Christian and attended First Presbyterian Church in Hampton. After raising her children, Sharon reentered the workforce. She taught GED classes at the Hampton Jail and later dedicated her time to helping English Language Learners at Hampton High School. Several years later, she retired and dedicated her life to her children, grandchildren, and great grandchild. Sharon particularly enjoyed watching her grandchildren compete in sports, basketball and swimming were her favorites. She loved to spend a lot of time watching college basketball and football. Keeping up with current events, shopping, and reading were also a few of her favorite things.

Sharon is preceded in death by her parents, Willard Allison and Johnnie Clyde Chambers, and her siblings, Judith Trapp and Gary Chambers. She is survived by her husband, Albert Paul Burton, Jr.; her sister, Sylvia Pouncy; and her children, Alison B. Jansen and Albert Paul Burton III (Dorothy Burton). She is also survived by her seven grandchildren, Molly Bogda (Kyle Bogda), Joby Jansen Jr., Ethan Jansen, Evan Jansen, Nathaniel Burton, Leah Burton, Lauren Burton and her great granddaughter, Alice Bogda.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations in the name of Sharon Chambers Burton be made to First Presbyterian Church in Hampton, VA. Mail checks to: First Presbyterian Church of Hampton, 514 S. Armistead Ave., Hampton, VA 23669.

On Saturday, March 11, 2023, A Celebration of Life will be held in the sanctuary of First Presbyterian Church at 2:00pm. Immediately following the service, a reception will be held in the fellowship hall at First Presbyterian Church where the family will receive friends and family.
