Sarah Newbold Jones, 91, of Hampton passed peacefully on 17 August 2023. Married at age 70 to Charles Cary (Casey) Jones at St. John's Church, Hampton, Sarah was born in Hampton, traveled worldwide, and lived in many places including Rio De Janeiro, Brazil; Cranford New Jersey, Englewood New Jersey, Washington DC, and Reedville Virginia. In her youth, she spent summers at her grandfather Richard Cary Lee's home on Cary Street in Hampton.
Sarah was pre-deceased by her parents Fort Farinholt Vaughan and Olive Lee Vaughan; a sister, Lucy Lee Vaughan Nelson; her first husband Fitz Eugene Dixon Newbold; a nephew, William Paul Nelson; and her grand-niece Heather Lee Bessent.
Surviving Sarah are her husband Cary, son Thomas Emerson Newbold (Isabelle) of Trumbull CT, stepchildren Marion Newbold Sukovich of Aiken SC, Eleanor Newbold Sinkler of Kittery Point ME, Scott Jones of Mathews VA, Bruce and Paige Jones of Astoria OR, and Lance Pedigo of Williamsburg VA. Grandchildren of locations worldwide are Blakely, Oliver, Elliot, and Hannah Newbold; Emily and Charles Sinkler, Robert Ripley, James Terrell, and Wesley, Nathan, Jacob, Luke, and Jesse Jones. There are 15 great grandchildren and a special niece, Tina Nelson Estes of Chesterfield VA.
Sarah attended Sweet Briar College and worked as an executive secretary for several legal firms. She loved many forms of art and was an accomplished painter, creating beautiful seascapes of her beloved Chesapeake Bay as well as portraits of her many pets including Oscar and Nelly. She served as a volunteer at Washington (DC) National Cathedral, on the vestry of St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Reedville VA, and sang with the choir at the Chamberlin on Fort Monroe in Hampton. She and husband Cary acted with the Westmoreland Players in Callao VA.
Special thanks go out to the wonderful staff at Harmony on the Peninsula in Yorktown VA. The family will gather for a private memorial celebration at a later date.
