She grew up on her beloved Neffield Farm which always held a special place in her heart. Sara attended Marion Junior College and graduated from Newberry College in South Carolina. After teaching in Martinsville, Virginia, Sara came to Hampton to begin a 41 year teaching career. Sara was always involved in a variety of educational committees and special groups like the Junior League and Delta Kappa Gamma.
Upon her arrival in Hampton, she met her future husband, Leon Lewis Alligood, and they were later married on November 30, 1964 in Rural Retreat. During their 51 year marriage, Sara and Leon enjoyed traveling, dining out, and spending time with their friends and family. One of her greatest joys in life was her love for her church, Gloria Dei Lutheran, where she was a charter member, as well as a faithful long time member of the choir.
