William "Sam" Smith, 71, died Tuesday, May 3, 2022. A lifelong resident of Hampton, he retired from Maida development in 2006 after 29 years of service. A frequent patron at Century Lanes, he was an avid bowler and in 2016 was elected into the Virginia Peninsula Bowling Hall of Fame. He had also been a member of the Mustang Clubs of America for many years.

Preceded in death by his parents, Garold and Alice Smith and his wife, Peggy D. Smith; survivors include his sister, Joy Taylor; his brother, Tony Smith; his son, Jason Smith and wife, Beth; his daughter Wendy Cumbie; granddaughters, Tabatha Havunen and husband, Stephen, and Cathy, Becky and Carolyn Cumbie; a great-granddaughter, Addilyn Havunen; two nieces, Nicole Taylor and Jessica Garza; and five great-nieces and great-nephews.

The family will receive friends from 5-6:30 PM Friday, May 6, 2022 at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home.
