Obituary

After 94 years, the world lost a gentle soul on Tuesday, December 22 nd , with the passing of Ruth Morris. She was affectionately known by the family as Nannie or Nan.  She was born in Waynesville, North Carolina on October 20, 1926 and graduated from Haywood County High School.  The booming postwar economy brought her family to the Peninsula and she met her future husband at Buckroe Beach.  She was a resident of Hampton for over 70 years.

She was predeceased by her husband of 61 years, David L. (Jimmy) Morris, her parents, Gladys and William Jennings Bryan Ball, her sisters, Mary George Balmer and Shelly Jean Hines.  She leaves to cherish her memory, her four children and their spouses, Dave Morris (Debbie), Rick Morris (Patty) Debbie Bullard (Donald), and Roger Morris (Barbara).  Ruth had seven grandchildren, Christine Esthay (Marty), Lauren Morris, Collin Morris (Jessica), Jordan Morris, Jacob Morris, Jerry Widener and David Lynch and a great grandchild, Mason Esthay.  Ruth also leaves many nieces and nephews to cherish her memory.

In addition to being a loving and caring mom, Ruth pursued her passion for crafting with a partner and had a small business, "She Sells Sea Shells", and was well known for her many beautiful and ingenious Christmas tree ornaments.  For many years, she delivered meals to the elderly for "Meals on wheels", and was a frequent blood donor.  She was also active in the Buckroe Women's Club and The Red Hat Society (Red Hatters).  But most of all, she loved spending time with her children and grandchildren.

The family would like to thank family friend and caregiver Cathy McQuillan for her time and loving care of mom over the last few years.  The family would also like to thank the staff at The Newport and James River Convalescent and Rehabilitation Centers for their incredible and compassionate care of our mom.
