Ruth Marie Giles, 93, died Saturday, September 8, 2018. Born in Kinley, NC. Ruth worked all her life starting with nine years on a farm in North Carolina where she cooked and cleaned for four adults in a foster home. Her first paying jobs were with Big Star and A&P Grocery, and then five years with Wilkins TV in Portsmouth as a bookkeeper. She moved to Hampton in 1930 and went to work for LaVogue and Virginia Specialty stores as accounts payable specialist. Ruth was a member of Buckroe Baptist Church for over 30 years and served the church in many positions.

Ruth was preceded in death by her 1st husband, James Henderson, 2nd husband Maurice Giles; twin sons, Charles Ray and Ernest Gray Henderson; daughter, Rose Marie Henderson; sister, Jewell Dozier (Pete); brother, JW Mumford (Ruby). Left to cherish her memory is one son, JW Henderson (Samantha); eleven grandchildren, nineteen great-grandchildren, several great-great grandchildren; four wonderful nephews, Monte Dozier(Audrey), Ronnie, Richard and Kenneth Mumford; two very special nieces, Joanne Mortman (Mark) and Pattie Powers (Walter).

A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 pm, Saturday, September 22, 2018 at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home, 245 S. Armistead Ave, Hampton with interment to follow in Hampton Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Saturday prior to the service from 1-2 pm.

Ruth had requested that any memorials take the form of donations to Buckroe Baptist Church or the American Cancer Society.
