Russell Mike Ward Jr, 92, died Tuesday, September 23, 2014 at Sentara Careplex. Born May 12, 1922 in Newport News and raised in the Hilton Village, Mike was the son of Alma Rawles Ward and Russell Mike Ward, Sr. He was preceded by his parents; brother B.F. "Buzz" Ward and his first wife, Yvonne Kelly Ward, who had been his high school sweetheart. Mike is survived by his loving wife, Jane Kirby Ward of Hampton; his daughter, Killian "Shelley" Ward of Divide, CO; his granddaughter, Lindsey Norton Caines; great-grandsons, Carter and Emmett Caines of Colorado Springs, CO; also three step-sons, Gene, Ken and Mark Kirby and their families. Mike graduated from St. Vincent's High School (now Peninsula Catholic) and entered the NNSY Apprentic School until being drafted for WII in December 1942. He served in the Army Field Artillery landing on the beaches of Normandy. He served in France, Belgium, Holland and Germany and in the Battle of the Bulge. In 1950, he was recalled to active duty and sent to Korea for one year. Mike was a member of Hampton Baptist Church where he served generously as long as health permitted. A memorial service for Mike will be conducted at 2:00 pm Saturday, September 27, 2014 at Hampton Baptist Church, 40 Kings Way, Hampton. A private interment will be held in Parklawn Memorial Park. Donations in his memory may be given to Hampton Baptist Church Rebuilding Fund.
