Obituary

Russell Murphy Gentry, 64, passed away on March 27, 2009. Russ was preceded in death by his parents Russell C. Gentry, Jr. and Janice M. Gentry. He is survived by his brother, Rodney B. Gentry (Tricia), and his maternal aunts, Jean M. Savedge and Barbara W. Murphy. Also surviving are his cousins George C. Savedge (Hope) and Joseph W. Savedge (Cheryl), niece, Paige Gentry Bacon (Rusty), nephew, Andrew D. Gentry (Stevi), and six great nieces and nephews.

Russ was a graduate of Hampton High School, Shenandoah Conservatory of Music (BA) and the University of Cincinnati School of Music (MA). As a lifelong member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church in Hampton, he was active in his church on the local and regional levels. Russ was a professional musician and was a church organist and choir director at several peninsula churches over the years. He loved choral, piano, and organ music, and began his musical journey at age 4 under the tutelage of Harold Chapman. Russ was a kindhearted person and although could be a musical perfectionist, he possessed a keen wit and a good sense of humor.

A memorial service will be held at Aldersgate United Methodist Church, 151 Wythe Pkwy., Hampton Virginia on Wednesday, April 4th, at 2 PM, with a reception to follow in the church fellowship hall.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to Aldersgate United Methodist Church general fund.
