Roy Thomas "Master Gunny" Sabo of Gloucester Point, Virginia, departed this world on the evening of Monday, April 3, 2023. Born in 1938 in Lee County, Virginia, Roy was raised in a coal mining company town as the youngest of six children. His earliest memories are of butter rations, Tennessee football radio broadcasts, and his oldest brother returning home following his military service in the Battle of the Bulge. After his father's death in 1952, the family moved to Flint, Michigan, where his older brothers had previously secured employment with General Motors. Roy joined the Marine Corps in 1957, during which time he earned the rank of Master Gunnery Sergeant and was awarded the Silver Star and a Purple Heart for his actions in Vietnam. Following his military retirement, he served as union steward for multiple organizations, and coached both Pop Warner and middle school football. After full retirement in 2001 Roy moved back home to Virginia where he spent his time surrounded by his children and grandchildren. In his last days he received outstanding and continual care from Riverside Hospice and Ms. Sweet, who made the end of his journey comfortable for both him and his family. As he is reunited with his parents (Steve and Dora) and siblings (Steve, Helen, Annabel, Margaret and Jim) he is missed by his children Theresa and Kurt DeGraw, Eric Sabo, Phil and Janine (nea Wilson) Sabo, and Roy and Cynthia Sabo, grand children Grady Sabo, Ryan DeGraw, Lane Sabo, Jason DeGraw, Abby Sabo, Madison Sabo, Michael Sabo and Molly Sabo, and all who knew him.

A funeral service will be held at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home in Hampton, Virginia, at 2pm,  Wednesday April 12, 2023. Interment in Arlington National Cemetery will follow at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to The Shriners Hospital for Children.
