Ross A. Kearney, III, 48, died unexpectedly Monday, March 27, 2017 at his home in Hopewell, VA. Born in Hampton, he was a 1986 graduate of Phoebus High School where he had served as Student Government President and was Co-captain of Coach Bill Dee's first Phantom football team. Ross then attended Ferrum College.
Ross worked for the Peninsula Radio Media group in sales and later he served as Assistant Clerk of Courts for the City of Petersburg for several years. He was the former Director of Community Relations for the Hampton Roads Transit Authority until moving to Hopewell, where he was currently serving as Clerk of the City Council for the city of Hopewell.
In addition to his service to the public, everyone knew of his love of sports on all levels, especially the Washington Redskins, Notre Dame and Phoebus High football.
Preceded in death by an infant sister, Kelly Lynn Kearney, Ross is survived by his parents, Ross A., II and Trudy D. Kearney, his sister Erin K. Lazar (Shawn) and his brother Wm. Heath Kearney (Kristina). He took great pride in his nieces Madison, Megan and Morgan Kearney and Olivia and Abby Lazar.
Ross attended St. James Catholic Church in Hopewell, but was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, 514 Buckroe Avenue, Hampton, VA 23664 where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Rev. Sonny Guadalupe at 11:00 am Saturday, April 1, 2017.
Memorials may be in the form of contributions to the Hopewell Fire Department, 200 S. Hopewell St., Hopewell, VA 23860. The family will be at the home of his parents.
