IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Roselyn Sue
Hughes
June 28, 1934 – September 17, 2023
Roselyn Sue Hughes, 89, peacefully entered her heavenly home on September 17, 2023, from her residence at The Chesapeake retirement community in Newport News, VA. She leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and unforgettable memories. Sue was born in Princeton, Indiana to Edwin F. and Marie Rinehart on June 28, 1934. She was preceded in death by her parents, her older sister Mary Jo Swader, and sister-in-law Joann Rinehart.
Sue was a beloved friend to many people, a devoted family and church member, and cherished member of our community. Her compassion extended far beyond her immediate circle. She was known for her volunteer work, always ready to lend a helping hand to those in need. Whether it was through church, charitable organizations, or school mission work, Sue touched countless lives with her selflessness.
Sue graduated from Oakland City High School in 1952 as first chair French Horn and class president (and presided over her class' 70th reunion in 2022). She then became the first in her family to go to college and graduated with her Registered Nursing diploma from Deaconess Hospital, Evansville, IN where she met and married the love of her life, Jesse W. Hughes, Jr. on September 9, 1955. Jesse and Sue traveled around the world and the United States while Jesse was assigned to various Air Force bases and then as an international consultant. Although Sue worked as a nurse during several of the assignments, she felt her most accomplished work was as the "Infant Stimulation" coordinator in Hampton and Newport News, helping scores of young developmentally delayed children and their families maximize their potential through early intervention. Sue's love for music continued throughout her life whether singing, playing the piano, bells or other instruments. She also was actively involved in the leadership of both Buckroe United Methodist and First Fox Hill United Methodist churches, most recently as Mission Chair. At The Chesapeake she led the chimes group.
Sue is survived by her husband of 68 years and their three children: Elizabeth Ann Hughes of Hampton, VA; Deborah Hughes White (and husband Roy) of Nelson County, VA; and David Lee Hughes (and wife Amy) of Zion Crossroads, VA. She is the beloved grandmother to seven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren and to many others she took under her wing over the years. She is also survived by her brother (Edwin R. Rinehart of Santa Claus, IN) and multiple nieces, nephews and cousins.
The funeral to honor and remember Sue will be held on Friday, September 22, at 11am at First United Methodist Church - Fox Hill, 1 Salt Pond Road, Hampton, VA followed by a reception.
In lieu of flowers, Sue requests that donations be made to the National Kidney Foundation which provides education, advocacy, support for families and patients and research for those affected with kidney disease.
