Roland P. Bugg, Sr., 100, widower of Emma H. Bugg, entered into eternal rest on December 27 at the Chase City Nursing & Rehab Center in Chase City, VA.
Born and educated in Mecklenburg County, he was also a 64 year resident of Hampton, VA. He was a member of Gideon's International, Khedive Temple & Past Master of the Chesapeake Masonic Lodge.
A decorated 4 year World War II Veteran, he served with Company E in the 116th infantry Division of the Army. He was in the 1st wave of the D Day invasion at Omaha Beach, Normandy, for which he received a purple heart.
Mr. Bugg retired as a Senior Marketing Consultant for Peoples Life Insurance in the Washington, DC division. He was ordained as a United Methodist Lay Minister in 1952. As a chaplain & minister, he served with the Hampton Police Dept., Industrial Commercial Ministries & performed marriage & burial services for numerous Peninsula residents.
He is survived by his son R. Pickett Bugg, Jr.; his daughter Elizabeth Hagy; granddaughter Susan Florin; grandson Joe Hagy; and three great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at 1 PM, Friday, December 30, 2016 at Bethany United Methodist Church, 1509 Todds Lane, Hampton. Interment will follow in Parklawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at church one hour prior to the service.
