Robert Nils Nelson, 84, died Friday, March 24, 2023. Born in Cape May, NJ, he had lived most of his life in Hampton. He was a boat captain for many years and, not one to stay idle, went to work as a motorist assistant for VDOT retiring in 2022. He loved fishing and hunting.

Preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Ellen Nelson; survivors include his children, Angela, Stephanie and Tony Nelson; two brothers, Stevie and David Nelson; a sister, Rose Nelson; his special friend, Jeanette Reichenbach; eleven grandchildren; and twelve great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be conducted at 3:00 PM on Saturday, April 1, 2023 in the R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home chapel.
