June 27, 1939 – September 28, 2017
Robert "Bob" Mitzel passed away peacefully at his home in Hampton on August 12, 2017 age 78.
Bob received his bachelors of science with a major in mathematics and physical science and a minor in Education and Psychology from Valley City State Teachers College. After which Bob taught school in Riverdale, N.D. for 6 years. He then worked as a civil servant with the Air Force in Okinawa, Japan as a counselor from 1968-72; he was a base education officer at San Vito Air Station in Italy from 1972-75 and at Moody AFB, GA for one year. Following his time in Georgia, he served as Chief of Education and Training at Langley AFB from 1977-96. After this he accepted a position as Chief of Education and Training USAF at Ramstein, Germany from 1996-2001. Upon retirement, he worked at Enterprise Car Rental where he "picked you up". Bob was an active member in the community and was a past president of St. Joseph's Parish Council, and sang in the choir for over 30 years. As a member of the Knights of Columbus, he helped at "Nights Welcome" to feed and house homeless. He will be sadly missed, especially his heartfelt hugs, his funny jokes and reminiscent storytelling.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Martin and Margaret Mitzel and sister Florence Wentz.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Linda; son, Dean (Grazie) of Florianopolis, Brazil, son, James (Joanna) of Hayes, VA, and daughter, Sheri (Ryan) Mitzel-Oswald of Tucson, AZ, and sister, Bernie Fettig of Bismarck, N.D. along with 3 grandchildren, Danae, Ross and Rilan as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He had 146 1st cousins!
A memorial service will be held Sept. 30th at 11am at St. Joseph Catholic Church.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the St. Joseph's Food Pantry.
