IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Robert Williams
Jr.
May 1, 1927 – May 19, 2017
Robert H. Williams, Jr. passed away at his home, surrounded by family, on Friday, May 19, 2017. He was the oldest of six children born to Robert Hall, Sr. and Nellie deKeyzer Williams.
Born on 05/01/27 in Wilson, NC, "Bob" recently celebrated his 90th birthday with a joyous gathering of close to 100 extended family and friends in attendance.
As a child, Bob lived in Wilson, Ocean View and Portsmouth. After attending Woodrow Wilson High School, he joined the U.S. Navy. He served on 4 ships before being assigned to the Occupational Forces in Naples, Italy. Bob loved the Navy, but left to help his father start a family roofing/sheet metal business in Roanoke Rapids, N. C. It is there that he met the love of his life, Ann Grizzard. After a courtship of a few years, they married on 10/11/52 and shared their marriage for almost 65 years together. It is there that their first child, Lisa, was born. Two years later, they moved to Newport News where Bob went to work for NNS&DD Co. and his second child, Martin, was born. The family moved to Hampton, where the final two children, Susan and Scott, were born. The house they bought in Buckroe has remained the family home for 59 years. Bob became a Senior Hull Designer at the shipyard, and later was employed by John J. McMullen, Inc. , from which he retired in 1989. Bob loved his work and the time he spent in the shipbuilding industry. He developed many lifelong friendships . He frequently reminisced and shared stories of his designer days.
Bob was a family man thru and thru. He and Ann shared many fun times with the children camping, boating, and fishing. The family camped throughout Va and N.C., often taking additional friends with them. From the mountains of Virginia to the OBX, frequent road trips in the station wagon resulted in side trips to visit relatives. If there was a relative within 50 miles of the destination, it was Bob's rule to "stop in." It was important that his children grow up knowing the importance of family love. He also shared his expertise of hunting, and home improvement skills with his children, showing undeniable patience.
When Bob retired, it took less than 5 minutes for him to be adjusted. He had many interests to enjoy, which included baseball (Nationals), hunting, fishing, playing the harmonica and storytelling.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Martin Holt Williams; brothers A.J., Howard and Jimmy Williams; sisters-in-law Barbara B. Williams and Frankie Dobbins; brother-in-law Dennis Jordan; and niece Cindy Odom.
His memories will be cherished by his loving wife, Ann; son Scott (Linda); daughters Lisa Walker (Kent), Susan Craft (Sam); grandchildren: Ryan, Chad and Julie Williams; Sarah Rogers (Wylie), Savannah Craft; brother, Harry Williams (Barbara); sister, Margaret Ann Jordan; and 5 well-loved nephews; 8 precious nieces and many dear cousins and extended family members.
Memorial Service and Reception will be held at First United Methodist Church Foxhill, One Salt Pond Rd, Hampton, VA 23664 on Sunday, May 28th at 2:00pm. In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to the church or your favorite charity.
