Robert Lee Hendry, Sr., was born on July 25, 1947 in the District of Columbia.  He was the second of five children born to Leslie and Dorothy Hendry.

He spent his younger years in the DC area where he attended school.  He graduated high school and worked for a short time for AT&T.  Bob or Robbie, as he is lovingly referred to by his family, enlisted in the United States Air Force on July 25, 1966.  He often told the story with laughter about receiving his draft papers for the Army while he was in training with the Airforce. Robert served in the Air Force in Thailand during the Vietnam war working on Jet engines, and continued his service for 20 years until he retired at Langley AFB in August 1986.

After retiring from the military Robert went into driving tracker trailers for the Army Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES). He enjoyed being on the open highway and being able to provide for his large family.

A quiet, gentle man, he would always speak to the cashier, or waitress, anyone he came in contact with.  His goal was to make them smile.  He was happiest when he was surrounded by his family.  The simpler he could keep things in life the better was how he lived.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents Leslie Candler Hendry,Sr. and Dorothy Sue Pierce Hendry, a sister Kathy Hendry Deland. He leaves to cherish his memories, wife of 34 years Alissa H. Hendry, Children, Debbie Thomas, Robert Lee Hendry, Jr., (Jessica), Lisa Edwards-Hendry, Kasye Rae Lee (Robert), Jason Fann, Christopher Fann, Laqueeta Ashlock, and Destiny Layton. Sisters Deborah Heinbuch, and Michelle Geisler, and one brother Leslie Hendry, Jr. (Connie). Nineteen grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
