Robert "Shorty" Benjamin Harrison III, passed away peacefully on February 13, 2017. Bob was born December 4, 1923 in Hampton and graduated from Hampton High School. He was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Hampton where he taught Sunday School for over 15 years; leaving a lasting impression on those he taught. Bob served his country in the US Army in France and Germany during WWII.
A charter member of the Hampton Yacht Club, Bob had a lifelong love of sailing, raced the Hampton 1 Design and The Wild Turkey, receiving many awards. Bob was a people-person with an infectious smile and loved to dance. He and Nancy enjoyed their Friday night outings at the Mallory Community Center.
Preceded in death by his parents, Robert Harrison II and Pearl M. Jones; brothers, Pauley and Jeff; and sister, Virginia. Survivors include his wife, Nancy Sauls Harrison; brothers, William and Edward; step-daughter, Irene, and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, February 21, 2017 at 10 AM at St. John's Episcopal Church, Hampton. Friends and family will gather after the service for a reception in the Parish Hall. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Virginia Peninsula Foodbank or St. John's Episcopal Church of Hampton. Arrangements by R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home, Hampton. www.rhaydensmith.com.
