Major Robert Lenfestey Hall, 69, of Hampton, Virginia passed away Thursday, December 17, 2015, peacefully in his sleep. Born in Norfolk, Virginia December 6, 1946, he was the son of the late Samuel Perry and Jessie Lenfestey Hall. He was preceded in death by his brother George and sister Katherine.
Robert graduated from Maury High School in Norfolk and the Newport News Shipbuilding Apprentice School. He worked 50 years in the shipyard and held many positions, including apprentice instructor, construction supervisor and area planner. He retired in March. During his tenure he helped construct every aircraft carrier in the fleet and many of the 688 class submarines. Robert served in the United States Army and the Virginia National Guard. He retired as Major after over 20 years of service to his nation.
Robert was active in the Boy Scouts both as a young man (Troop 24) and later as an adult leader (Troop 151). His Vigil Honor name in the Order of the Arrow translated as the Toiler, a measure of respect for his efforts. From his parents he gained a great love of camping and always enjoyed going with family and friends. Well versed in Civil War history, literature and poetry, he was an outgoing conversationalist who enjoyed talking to people about anything and everything. Throughout his life he sought to bring the joy of knowledge, history and literature to everyone he met.
He is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Diann Carlson, two sons David Michael Hall (and wife Donnan) of Natchitoches, Louisiana; George Carlson Hall (and wife Kathryn) of Onancock, Virginia; grandson Stephen Hall of Onancock, Virginia; niece Anne Hickox Leavines (and husband Chuck) of Hampton, Virginia; great niece Kendall Leavines and great nephew Colby Leavines both of Hampton, Virginia.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00am on Tuesday, December 22, 2015 in the dining room at the Chamberlain Hotel in Hampton, Virginia. The family will have a private interment at a later date. In lieu of flowers the family request donations are made to the Hampton Roads Vision Walk.
