A special thanks to all who cared for Robert at Sentara Hospital. The fifth floor nurses and doctors were very caring and treated him like family. Robert felt he owed much of his extended life to that staff, and especially Dr. Fitzharris, Nannette, and his own personal staff.
In 1986, Robert retired from the position of Program and Budget Analyst, in the Logistics Division at Fort Monroe, after completing 36 years of employment. He also worked part-time at Sears, Roebuck in Newport News during the period 1972-1988 in the teletype and accounting departments.
Robert served in the Marine Corps for two years active service in the early 1950's and was honorably discharged in 1956 after serving four additional years of reserve duty. After completion of basic training at Parris Island, he was assigned as Secretary to Lt. Gen. Oliver P. Smith at the Fleet Marine Force Headquarters in Norfolk. Upon completing military service he devoted his time to supporting local musical groups. Robert had been a devoted opera enthusiast since his teenage years, performing with local opera/theater groups and as guest soloist at various churches and musical functions.
He spent his free time gardening, playing piano, and collecting records of Metropolitan Opera/Broadway musical performances.
