Richard Carey Topping, born May 3, 1948, in Hampton, Virginia, passed away peacefully on August 25, 2026.

Richard dedicated much of his life to serving others through the fire department. A lifelong firefighter, his commitment to his community was more than a calling - it was a part of who he was. He remained a proud member of the Buckroe Volunteer Fire Department throughout his life. His years of service, dedication, and brotherhood within the fire service were a source of great pride to him and will remain an important part of his legacy.

Richard was preceded in death by his devoted wife of 46 years, Elaine Topping; and his parents, George and Evelyn Topping.

He is survived by his son, Richard “Rick” Topping, III (Julia); his daughter, Kristen Brewer (Jason); and his cherished grandchildren, Katherine, Karly, Benjamin, and Colton. His family brought him tremendous happiness, and being a grandfather was one of his greatest joys, but there was something especially meaningful about being known simply as “Da”.

Richard has answered his final alarm. His shift is complete, his duty faithfully served, and he may now rest in peace with his beloved Elaine.

A graveside service will full firefighter honors will be held at a later date, with details to be announced.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Richard’s honor to Fox Hill Central United Methodist Church, 501 Beach Road, Hampton, VA 23664.
