Richard Lynne Cottingham, born January 24, 1941 in Newport News, VA, passed away September 28, 2024.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert P. Cottingham and Pauline S. Cottingham, his sister Frances C. Salt and his brother Robert P. Cottingham Jr.

Richard is survived by his loving wife, Marietta G. Cottingham; his son Christopher Scott Cottingham (Sarah); and his stepchildren, Valda Claiborne (James) and Aaron Smith (Laura).  He also leaves behind many cherished grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

A lifelong resident of the Peninsula, Richard was a proud graduate of East Carolina University and University of Virginia.  He dedicated 42 years to teaching with a special passion for teaching the inner-city students in the Petersburg and Richmond city schools.

Outside the classroom, Richard enjoyed restoring old cars, a hobby that brought him great joy.  He was also the founder and co-owner of Serenity C and C Incorporated.

Richard was a devoted member of Williamsburg Baptist Church for 71 years where a service will be held to honor his life on Thursday, October 3, 2024 at 11AM. The family will receive friends at the church from 10-11AM. Interment will follow the service in Williamsburg Memorial Park.
