Richard
Bessette
September 14, 1929 – February 10, 2026
St Joseph's Church
Starts at 12:00 pm (Eastern time)
Richard “Dick” Bessette, born September 14, 1929, in Fall River, Massachusetts, to Joseph and Blanche (Cote) Bessette, passed away peacefully on February 10, 2026, at the age of 96. A gifted musician and a devoted serviceman.
For more than 20 years, Richard served in the United States Army, including proud service during the Korean War. He dedicated his military career to the Army Band, where his work included ceremonial performances, formal military functions, and concerts that showcased both his talent and his deep commitment to those he served alongside.
Even after retiring from the Army, Richard never set his instrument aside. Music remained his lifelong companion. He had a wonderful singing voice and played multiple instruments, allowing him to entertain in countless ways and bring joy to every gathering. His performances—whether on a stage, at community events, or in the comfort of home—created connection, celebration, and lasting memories.
Richard’s passions extended far beyond his instrument. He had a deep appreciation for good music, a plate of Mexican food, and the satisfaction of finding a great deal. His thrifty nature was legendary—he could stretch a dollar further than most people thought possible, and he took pride in it. Whether discovering a bargain, savoring his favorite dishes, or tapping his foot to a familiar tune, Richard found happiness in life’s simple pleasures and shared that joy generously with those around him.
Richard is survived by his children: Robert (Tammi) Bessette, Linda Bessette, and Tracy Luna. He was lovingly known as “Pepe’” to his grandchildren: Jennifer Lopez, Karen (Doug) Ramsey, Audra (Mike) Poppy, Ricky (Hazel) Bessette, Lindsay (Kevin) Epstein, Robby (Candy) Bessette, Missy Barrickman, Andrew Luna, Diana (Luke) Taubert, Adam Luna, and Michael Quattlebaum. He also leaves behind 16 great-grandchildren and 6 great-great-grandchildren, each of whom brought him immense pride and joy. Richard is further survived by his sisters, Alice Coderre and Rita Johnsen—Rita passing away just a few days after her beloved brother—and by many loving nieces and nephews.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents; the mother of his children, Georgia (Koons) Bessette; his daughter, Janet Zapolski; his son, Richard “Buzz” Bessette; his daughter‑in‑law, Debby Bessette; his brothers, Adrian Bessette and George Bessette; and his sister, Claire St. Jean.
A memorial service with military honors is planned for June 20, 2026 at St Joseph's Church, 18 Main St., North Grosvenor Dale, CT, at 12pm., followed by a celebration of life.
Rest easy, Dad. We won't forget to brush our teeth.
